Dr. Barry Schwartz has made a career of changing people’s lives…for the better. As a leading South Florida plastic surgeon, he’s changed countless lives of people who have come to his elective plastic surgery practice at the Weston Center for Plastic Surgery for cosmetic surgery of the face, breasts, trunk, nose, and eyes. He started his practice in 1978 in North Miami Beach after graduating from the Miami School of Medicine and opened the Weston Center in 1992. He decided on a career in plastic surgery after spending two in the U.S. Army Medical Corp in the early 1970s.

That same passion in changing lives played out in a totally different way…working with Haitians whose lives were devastated by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010. With an estimated 3 million people affected by the quake, all of the members of the Florida  Society of Plastic Surgeons were contacted by Project Medishare, asking for any help they could offer. “I immediately volunteered,” Dr. Schwartz recalled. “It was the best use possible for my skills and to give back for all I had been able to accomplish in my life.

His trip started when his wife Donnarae dropped him off at the Miami International Airport. “I immediately headed to Vision Air, where I met several of the people I would get to know well over the next week,” he noted. Between his departure from MIA and his return flight, he admits that his life changed dramatically. His first surgery was on a young man who was brought into the O.R. on a stretcher with an acute abdomen. The operation on a perforated bowel was a success – one of many.

“In recounting his experience, Barry compared the medical facilities to something people would have seen on the popular TV show M.A.S.H.,” Donnarae said. “He talked about the makeshift showers, poor lighting, cramped tents, and long hours. But he also talked about the hard work of his fellow surgeons and the reserve and appreciation of the Haitian People.”

Barry and Donnarae enjoy travel, going to the beach, and spending time with their granddaughter.

Dr. Schwartz was recently named “Member of the Month” by the Weston Hills Country Club, paying tribute to him for his spirit of community here and in Haiti.
