Do not let the small store front in The Shoppes at Heron Lakes fool you.

Step through Falafel Bistro’s doors and you are transported from the sand and beige colored textures of the plaza exteriors to a lustrous interior with a long red bar, black marble-like tables and dark woods – all basking in the glow of the chandeliers’ amber light. There’s a real sense of entering into a contemporary rendition of a Mediterranean café.

Even on a weeknight that is typically slower for most establishments, there is a bustle of customers talking and eating. A small DJ set-up with mixers and turntables is ready to provide entertainment.

The menu includes a wide range of flavors and tastes – not just of a collection of falafels and hummus. A variety of dishes are gluten free and vegan friendly. Even as a die-hard carnivore, I found the sauteed cauliflower flavorful with just a bit of bite of the spicy date sauce that made it delectable. The three soups of the day, chosen from 27 recipes, are a great starter to any meal. The tomato soup was comforting and reminded me of my grandmother’s recipe.

The sun-dried tomato hummus is a simple blend of flavors with a thick but smooth consistency that pairs well with the falafel balls and the mix of nuts and tomatoes in the center. The turkey meatballs were so well-prepared with seasoning that they nearly tasted like beef and are very hearty for even a small plate serving. The falafel itself has a firm toasted outside and a tender inside almost like a good steak or meatball, and was infused with a mix of herbs and seasoning, which made them good enough to eat alone or with hummus. Or, if you prefer the real thing, the Bistro burger made with Angus beef and served open-faced on a flatbread is juicy with each bite.

The wine list is not lacking either, with a selection of woodsy Zinfandels to dark Cabernets to sweet white wines from the Pacific Rim. And if wine is not your poison, then there is a selection of craft beers to choose from to enjoy with your dinner or on their own.

Bottom line: Falafel Bistro & Wine Bar is priced right and gives a broad selection for whatever cravings you might have while still catering to a healthier mind-set.
