Brewing with Tasty Possibilities


There are great things brewing at Funky Buddha Brewery, the popular Oakland Park spot known for making some of the coolest beers in town. The craft brewery recently opened Craft Food Counter & Kitchen inside its tap room; not only is the food made with local ingredients, but many of the dishes incorporate the beers and are designed to pair perfectly with certain brews.

The menu, dreamed up by Chef Jeff Vincent, former executive chef of Beauty & The Feast, is a good mix of meats and fresh veggies, meaning there is something for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans. I’m a vegetarian, so I brought Debbie, my favorite meat eater, to cover all the bases.

There are no food waiters, but the pick-up style of ordering is casual and easy. We started with the Blistered Peppers, roasted shishito peppers with sesame oil and sprinkled with crushed roasted peanuts and sea salt. Eating the peppers was like playing Russian roulette, since hidden in the bunch are a couple of hot ones; but we polished off every last bite. The peppers are designed to be washed down with Funky Buddha’s On-Top Blonde.

Debbie loved the Main Street Pork Sandwich, which was made with shredded pork shoulder marinated in Funky Buddha’s Hop Gun IPA. The tangy mustard barbecue sauce is exceptional, served in the perfect amount as to not drown out the meat.

The Dr. Feelgood Veggie Burger, which is made with freshly ground chickpeas, quinoa and spent grains complemented by a zesty lemon herb aioli and spinach focaccia, was superb. The patty was moist and seasoned to perfection – one of the best I’ve ever had. It’s meant to be paired with the 42 Truths Florida Pale Ale, a bright beer made in collaboration with Tap 42.

The Griddled Cheese, served on beer-buttered challah bread with a creamy blend of sheep cheese and Gouda, was accompanied by a raspberry chili pepper jam that was equally sweet and spicy. The Fuhgeddaboudit Red Ale balanced all the flavors magically.

Like the beer, the food at Craft Food Counter & Kitchen is funky and fresh – everything we’ve come to expect from Funky Buddha and more.
