SightTrustEye Institute Introduces New State-of-the Art Facility At Grand Opening Celebration on Thursday, June 7th in Sunrise, Florida
Cory M. Lessner, M.D. and Andrew C. Shatz, M.D. welcomed over 100 guests to the private Grand Opening Party for the SightTrust Eye Institute in Sunrise, Florida. A first-of-its-kind cataract and premium intraocular lens surgery center, SightTrust provides customized vision correction plans for patients with lens changes, hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism, using the most advanced technology available in the field.
The evening commenced with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony facilitated by Sunrise Commissioner Donald Rosen. The Redline Lady Panthers (Florida Panthers Ice Dancers) greeted and posed for photos with guests as they arrived. Guests, including former NFL stars Nat Moore and Ki-Jana Carter, enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres catered by CA Catering. Dr. Lessner and Dr. Shatz provided tours of the new state-of-the-art facility.
SightTrust Eye Institute is one of the first ophthalmic centers in the country to offer cataract surgery with the LenSx® laser. “Cataract surgery has never been performed with a laser – until now,” mentions Dr. Shatz. In a traditional cataract procedure, the surgeon uses a diamond or steel blade to create an incision, following which ultrasound vibrations break the cataract into small pieces that are then removed. The LenSx® cataract laser, on the other hand, uses light to create ultra-precise corneal incisions. The laser then gently divides the cataract into microscopic fragments that can be removed with virtually no ultrasound energy. This has been shown to decrease swelling and speed up visual recovery after surgery. The LenSx laser promises to provide more predictable and accurate results than traditional surgery, which should increase the likelihood of patients achieving their expected vision outcome.
With the opening of SightTrust Eye Institute, Dr. Lessner and Dr. Shatz are spearheading a new approach by performing insurance-reimbursed cataract and premium intraocular lens procedures in this new office base surgery center. Office-based surgery is not a new concept; physicians have been performing minor procedures inside their offices for decades. Procedures like cataract surgery, however, have not been recognized or reimbursed by insurance companies to date if performed in a doctor’s office. An office-based center provides the surgeon with tighter control over costs, while providing surgery in a familiar setting. According to Dr. Lessner, “In an effort to streamline and contain costs in the delivery of medical care, we have designed a fully accredited world-class office based surgical facility which will follow the same stringent health and safety rules as ambulatory surgery centers. Our challenge now is to seek recognition of this more efficient type of facility from third party payers and obtain fair reimbursement for the services provided.”
