Having a baby is one of the most exciting, rewarding, and challenging life transitions. It’s happy and stressful all at once!

From feeding every 2-3 hours to major sleep deprivation and hormonal changes, couples often find themselves more irritable and emotional.

Research shows that marital satisfaction decreases significantly after having a baby. It’s vital to take care of yourself and your relationship while navigating first-time parenthood. The best gift you can give your family is a strong and healthy relationship.

Tips for Couples Becoming New Parents:

1. Realistic Expectations – It takes time to find your new rhythm as new parents. Don’t assume that you’re on the same page with your partner. It’s important to discuss your expectations regarding roles and responsibilities so you can work together as a team.

2. Communicate Openly – Make sure to check in with each other daily to see how your partner is coping; calmly discuss challenges as they arise; and explore how to better support one another. It takes a village so ask for help when needed.

3. Be Compassionate – Give each other the benefit of the doubt instead of jumping to conclusions. Show compassion, understanding, and appreciation for yourself and your partner. Recognize your limitations and be flexible.

4. Safeguard Your Relationship – Once your bundle of joy is a few months old, it’s time to realign your relationship. Spend time with your partner while the baby is sleeping. When you feel comfortable leaving the baby with someone, sneak away for a quick date or do something fun that reminds you of your pre-baby life.
