MAPP (Mentorship, Advocacy, Purpose, and the Power of Women) is set to return to Miami on Tuesday, April 2, for the red carpet premiere of filmmaker Joanna James’ award-winning film, A Fine Line. The documentary explores and celebrates women in the culinary industry. The event will take place at the Regal Cinema in Miami Beach (1120 Lincoln Rd. Mall) and will be part of a day-long series of events to promote self-worth and respect for women in or looking to build a career in the restaurant industry.
The film premiere is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by an all-star panel discussion. The panel will feature several local and national female culinary stars, including Dominique Crenn, the only three Michelin-star female chefs in the U.S. and stars in the film. Eileen Andrade, Lorena Garcia, Karla Hoyos, Dayanny De La Cruz, Suzanne Baer, and Karina Rivera are other chefs joining her on the panel. The tickets for the film and panel are priced at $30 per person. Proceeds from the event will benefit the MAPP, a nonprofit organization that empowers women in the culinary and hospitality industry.
Those interested in broadening their learning opportunities and engaging more with MAPP can attend a mini-conference earlier on the same day at Santorini by Georgios (101 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach), starting at 3:30 p.m. The conference will feature industry leaders exploring the theme of “Creating a Culture of Respect” through rotating workshops and discussions on self-worth, including financial independence, to ensure that female professionals feel heard. Attendees will have the chance to meet one another during an appetizer, wine, and cocktail reception and speak with their industry heroes leading the panel conversations.
In addition to being the CEO and founder of MAPP, James serves as the director and producer of A Fine Line, which had its national broadcast premiere on PBS. The film served as a rallying call for greater gender equality in professional kitchens, laying the building blocks for what MAPP is today.
“It’s full circle not only bringing the film I made on creating gender equality in the hospitality industry to Miami, the hub of nightlife and epic restaurants, but also the nonprofit born from it, MAPP, hosting its annual conference here,” James says. “This time, women will get to see themselves and our universal stories on the big screen to ask ourselves how we can shape a future where respect, equality, and empowerment thrive.”
