Feeding South Florida Launches Hunger Action Month Initiative With the ‘Hunger Heroes Take Action’ Theme

In South Florida, more than 1.2 million individuals are experiencing food insecurity.

Feeding South Florida aims to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in the area by commemorating Hunger Action Month this September. The organization encourages South Floridians to “Go Orange” and stand against hunger through various activities. This initiative, created by Feeding America, is designed to shed light on the issue of hunger in America and motivate others to take action. Feeding South Florida’s theme for this year is “Hunger Heroes Take Action.”

One in nine people in South Florida are uncertain about where to get their next meal due to factors such as inflation, strained supply chains, rising fuel prices and increased housing costs. The proceeds raised during the month-long initiative will help Feeding South Florida fulfill its mission to end hunger in the region by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts and transforming lives through innovative programming and education.

During the month, an online auction will give bidders the chance to access unique and fun items while supporting Feeding South Florida’s hunger relief efforts. To raise awareness about hunger, Go Orange t-shirts and orange mustaches will also be available for purchase. In September, monetary donations will be matched one-to-one by Delta Airlines, up to $25,000. Every donation is crucial, as a $1 donation enables Feeding South Florida to provide approximately four meals to a needy family.

Feeding South Florida is set to organize Hunger Relief Town Hall Meetings during Hunger Action Month. These meetings aim to educate the public and potential donors about food insecurity and hunger relief efforts. The pivotal initiative is a collaborative effort involving Health Choice Network, Feeding South Florida, Broward Community and Family Health Centers, University of Miami Health System, and Jessie Trice Community Health System, facilitated by a National Institute of Health grant. The meetings will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including community leaders, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and grassroots advocates, to address the multifaceted challenges of food insecurity. The next meeting will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Nova Southeastern University’s Rick Case Arena.

“Hunger Action Month is an opportunity for the community to come together to raise awareness about food insecurity and be a part of the solution,” stated Paco Vélez, president and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “We’re grateful for our South Florida community, which participates in Hunger Action Month year after year to support our mission and help families in need. The month-long initiative will help us continue to raise awareness and crucial funds to put food on the table for South Florida families who need it the most.”
