Alonzo Mourning’s Overtown Youth Center Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The philanthropic evening will usher in a new facility.

The upcoming “It’s All Overtown” 20th Year Celebration Platinum Affair will honor the decades-long legacy of the Overtown Youth Center in Miami, founded by NBA Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning and real estate developer Martin Z. Margulies in 2003. The fundraising event will be held from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on April 13 at the newly constructed and redesigned center to commemorate the two decades of service provided to children, families, and adults in urban communities across Miami-Dade and South Florida.

The event will also celebrate the grand opening of OYC Miami’s new facility, completed in July 2023. The event’s goal is to raise funds for the long-term sustainability of OYC Miami. The nonprofit organization aims to inspire, empower, and enrich the lives of youth, adults, and families by providing a comprehensive and long-term approach to strengthening communities. Additionally, the event will showcase the redesigned center, which boasts 56,000 square feet of space, including 14 classrooms, a cafeteria, a health and wellness service center, a gym, and many more spaces.

“OYC was founded as a comprehensive community center for youth in the Overtown and surrounding communities, as I saw an imperative need to provide a welcoming, safe and motivating place that would give people a chance at success,” Mourning says. “Today, OYC Miami has grown into a thriving community and family resource center that serves not only as a beacon, but also as a catalyst for change. I am very proud of the expansion of our building, which is a testament to the growth and impact we have achieved over the past two decades.”

Throughout the evening, attendees can indulge in local cuisine provided by some of Miami’s most prominent restaurants, such as Il Gabbiano, Prime 112, Major Food Group, Red Rooster, Josh’s Premium Meats, and il Cucchiaio. In addition, they can enjoy live music, including a finale performance by the renowned American R&B singer-songwriter Ne-Yo.

OYC Miami at 450 NW 14th St. has established its local presence in 15 surrounding areas by focusing on five key pillars of impact: education, enrichment and exposure, health and wellness, family services, and economic sustainability. The organization cordially invites guests to participate in a philanthropic evening of celebration aimed at supporting its ongoing efforts to change the narrative of Miami’s most resilient communities.

General admission tickets are available for purchase at $500 and can be found by visiting OYC Miami. Attendees must be 21 or older.
