Miami Art Week brightens South Florida

We may not be able to enjoy Art Basel this year, but Miami is still celebrating all things art. Check out some of the activities going on below.

Digital Art Month Miami Contemporary and Digital Art Fair (CADAF)
Dec. 5-Jan.5
The Contemporary and Digital Art Fair (CADAF) returns to Miami with Digital Art Month, an innovative public digital art festival. This month-long event presents curated exhibitions of digital artworks placed in public locations across Miami. With the support of the Wynwood BID, Monira Foundation, Studio As We Are, and Studio Loutsis, Miami will be brought to life with over 70 works of Augmented Reality. Viewers will be able to safely navigate participating locations via the interactive map on the Digital Art Month website or by activating QR codes with the phone camera. Artworks will be able to be viewed through Instagram. As a part of the initiative, the global artistic community will share digital art on social media with the hashtag #DigitalArtMonth

Art of Black Miami
Dec. 1-Jan. 31
Part of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau’s (GMCVB) latest temptation program, Miami Arts, Culture, and Heritage Months, the Art of Black Miami initiative honors the Black diaspora with art exhibits, galleries, public art displays, and culinary tours. These exhibits and art initiatives are represented by significant works from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and around the globe, celebrating all genres of the visual arts representative of Miami’s rich heritage and communities during Miami Art Week. Virtual and in-person events will be available.

Museum of Graffiti
Celebrating its one year anniversary during Art Week, the Museum of Graffiti will be exhibiting artwork that honors the impact street art has had in the evolution of Miami’s art scene. Located in Wynwood, home to South Florida’s largest collection of street art, the Museum of Graffiti will be presenting two new exhibitions in the Museum’s gallery space. Visitors to the Museum will also be able to experience several updates to its permanent Style Masters exhibition, including the addition of a comprehensive display that highlights the impact of female graffiti artists on the movement. Events this week include the opening of Eye Candy, featuring new work by New York City graffiti pioneer, LA2 (Angel Ortiz; pictured above) (Dec. 4) and an outdoor screening of Why the Spray documentary (Dec. 5).

Studios on the Mile
Throughout December
Available spaces along Coral Gables’ iconic Miracle Mile have been converted into artist studios, just as Miami Art Week approaches. With the City of Coral Gables and Terranova’s support, the Coral Gables Business Improvement District has worked to transform seven retail spots into studios, where 21 local artists will create, display and sell their art to the public through the end of December. Curated by Carol Damian as part of the Gables Art CollectiveStudios on the Mile is open to the public. Visitors are welcome to see these local artists at work and browse their masterpieces while they stroll through one of Miami’s most popular thoroughfares. Plus, be on the lookout for newly commissioned murals showcasing inspiring messages and drawing visitors to photograph and pose with the temporary installations.
