Were you like me and didn’t complete all of the New Year’s resolutions you made for 2015?

This year, I decided my resolution would be to pay it forward by doing things for others. At least once a month, I will try to do an act of kindness to help someone.

You too can make one of your goals to be kind to others in your community: Volunteer at one of the city’s many organizations that help those in need – such as SOS Children’s Villages or Tomorrow’s Rainbow. Join the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), volunteering to help at a city event such as the 5K Butterfly Run at Sabal Pines Park on Feb. 7.
Help a neighbor or read to elementary school students.

Schools welcome mentors that can take time to listen to students and offer encouragement. I recently spent a Saturday morning at Coconut Creek Elementary helping students, teachers, staff, parents and one great-grandfather transform overgrown weeds into a beautiful butterfly garden that will help save the monarch butterflies. I encourage you to plant a butterfly garden in your yard.

January will be filled with things for you and your family to enjoy. The Creek Culture Series continues on Jan. 7 with “The Power of Folk Music in the Civil Rights Movement.” The next Concert in the Park will be held on Jan. 10 at the Community Center from 4 to 5:30 p.m., featuring WT Heck performing jazz and blues music; bring a chair or blanket and a neighbor to enjoy.

For all ages, the Movie in the Park at the Community Center will feature “The Boxtrolls” on Jan. 15. The Antiques and Collectibles Show returns to the Recreation Complex on Jan. 23. And don’t forget to sign up for the 14th-annual 5K Butterfly Run or to purchase tickets for Coconut Creek Night at the Miami Heat, when the Heat take on the Charlotte Hornets.

Thanksgiving was one of my favorite holidays when I was growing up in Ohio. My mother came from a large family, so I enjoyed when everyone got together. There were cousins to play with and stories to be told.  Before we dug into the delicious food that was spread on the table, each person would
