Great Staycation Escapes, Part 2

The Diplomat Beach Resort

Address: 3555 S. Ocean Drive, Hollywood

The allure: The Diplomat went dark for longer than expected amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the largest hotel in Broward County finally reopened in June—much to the delight of summer travelers ready to revel in all the mammoth property has to offer. Highlights includes more than 1,000 contemporary rooms and sprawling suites, two Instagram-worthy pools and 26 poolside cabanas (including specialty cabanas designed by Trina Turk) overlooking the ocean, a Dip & Slide water play area for kids, a marina for docking yachts and mega-yachts, a host of casual and high-end restaurants, and countless amenities.

Isn’t that special: The resort is welcoming back clients with a variety of summer packages. The Travel & Save offer shaves 15 percent off your stay, with early check-in and late check-out possibilities; those staying for more than three consecutive nights can add the fourth night for free; and Hilton travelers can double up on their Honors points, with the potential to receive up to four times the points each night of a stay through Sept. 6. In addition, The Diplomat is guaranteeing a room with a view of the ocean through Sept. 1 (based on availability).

Club Med Sandpiper Bay

Address: 4500 SE Pine Valley St., Port St. Lucie

The allure: Spread out across more than 50 acres along the St. Lucie River, this sprawling, all-inclusive property is designed for longer stays, family getaways, and activity-minded travelers. The wellness and fitness offerings don’t just stop at tennis, beach volleyball, and group sessions for Pilates, Zumba, and yoga enthusiasts. There’s waterskiing, a sailing school—and even flying trapeze classes. The 307-room resort is divided into seven two-story buildings; most rooms run around 500 square feet, but there are larger connecting rooms with views of the bay. In addition to the more casual fare at the Marketplace and Soleil Terrace, Sandpiper sports a steakhouse restaurant, The Riverside. Best of all, on the foodie front, the resort bakes fresh white chocolate bread—every day.

Isn’t that special: Extended-stay rates drop at Sandpiper Bay after school starts, so, if your schedule allows, consider booking between September and November. Call Club Med about other specials, including deals for larger groups.
