Feeding South Florida to Celebrate 40th Anniversary During Hunger Action Month

As a way to commemorate its record-breaking year and 40th anniversary, Feeding South Florida will host a variety of events in September during Hunger Action Month. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for food pantry items significantly increased across the tri-county area and Feeding South Florida was able to meet the demand.

“Although the increased need was a tough time for so many, we are humbled and grateful the community placed their trust in us to serve our children, grandparents and families in the 2020–2021 fiscal year,” says Paco Vélez, president and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “It is an honor to have served the South Florida community for 40 years, and we will continue to serve South Floridians facing food insecurity. Hunger Action Month is a great way for the community to come together, once again, to help end hunger.”

Hungry Action Month was established as a nationwide initiative created by Feeding America to raise awareness about the growing issue of hunger in America and motivate citizens to take action to lessen the need. Throughout September, Feeding South Florida will use its “Food Shouldn’t be an Impossible Choice” theme to provide a platform for people facing hunger who are often forced to make the difficult choice between food or other crucial needs like electricity, childcare and medicine.

With nearly 300,000 children and over 1 million people in South Florida not knowing where they will get their next meal, Hunger Action Month provides an opportunity for residents to participate in the month-long initiative to make a real and lasting impact in their communities.

To help needy families and residents find their next meals, events in South Florida will include:

  • 30 Ways in 30 Days
  • Start a virtual food drive
  • Volunteer during Feeding South Florida’s 24-hour Weekend of Service
  • Go Orange!
  • Get social
  • Take the SNAP Challenge
  • Pre-register for the 2022 Outrun Hunger 5K events
