Jess Crosson & Banjo | Meg Sahdala & Olivia

Pitch-perfect personalities, four paws at a time—these rescue pups are the real MVPs.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

I was connected to Miami Animal Rescue through the Marlins’ Bark at the Park. After following them for a while, I adopted Banjo in January—and from the moment we met, I knew he was meant to be mine. He’s not just a pet; he’s literally my son. Banjo’s goofy personality, loyalty, and love have brought so much joy into my life. He’s my sidekick, my comfort on hard days, and my favorite reason to stay home.

What is your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

One of Banjo’s quirkiest traits is his dramatic hatred of the shower—and not just his own. The second he senses I’m about to take one, he launches a full-on rescue mission, grabbing my leg or ankle to stop me from getting in. It’s like he’s begging me to reconsider. It’s hilarious, weirdly sweet, and totally him. I’ve never met a dog more passionately opposed to showers—especially when they don’t involve him.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

Olivia came into my life the way most great things do—unexpectedly and a bit messy. Starved, caged, and denied water, she had every reason to shut down. But her tough spirit won me over. She’s a Maltese who acts like a German Shepherd and quickly became my hiking buddy, shadow, and tiny bodyguard. Our bond wasn’t instant, but it’s unshakable.

What is your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Olivia has zero chill. You can’t hold her—she’s constantly squirming like she’s late for something. Her weirdest habit? She hoards her favorite treats like gold. She’ll place them beside her in bed and guard them for days, sometimes even relocating them like a squirrel with anxiety. It’s absurd… and kind of genius.

Pet Law Rising

In South Florida, where dogs ride shotgun on Las Olas and appear in holiday cards alongside their owners, the line between pet and family member has long been blurred. Now, that shift is showing up somewhere perhaps a little less expected: the courtroom. As veterinary costs climb and pet insurance policies become more common, a new category of legal work is taking shape. It’s one
