Ana Sasmiresan, Petunia & Max

These Doberman rescues bring joy, loyalty, and a splash of poolside chaos.

Tell us about your dogs

Meet Petunia and Max, my Doberman kids. We call them the 2.0s, as they were preceded by Pirate and Coco, our first set of Dobermans we rescued. When they went to heaven, we immediately rescued new family members. It is so incredibly hard to lose a fur-baby, however we have so much more love to give, and the ability to change more dogs’ lives. Dobermans are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and athleticism. They are also loving, Velcro-dogs, completely enamored with and connected to their owners.

What’s your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

They are so “human-like”; they follow us around, swim in the pool (nicknamed Dober-fish), watch TV on the couch, and they like to get their big noses in just about any project. Max’s superpower is to turn off the oven with his nose when I cook, and he is the biggest lapdog at 70 lbs. Petunia is the family security dog, and she takes this self-declared role very seriously.

What is your favorite pet charity or rescue organization and why?

My favorite rescue organization is the Doberman Rescue League (DRL). They were founded in 1977, and they are dedicated to rescuing and rehoming this wonderful breed. DRL’s mission is to rescue, protect, and educate, providing care and expertise to place Dobermans in loving homes, and their staff are all volunteers. My fiance, Marcel, and I started watching them 11 years ago and we not only rescued four dogs but also volunteered with DRL, because they are a local Fort Lauderdale rescue that helps our community and needs our support.
