Little Palm Island Resort & Spa wants you to put down that phone and breathe
Everyday life is hectic. A constant flow of work and family obligations, coupled with an endless supply of technology, can be overwhelming. Oftentimes, weekend getaways feel so rushed and packed with activities that you’re more tired upon return than when you left. If you’re looking for a true break from the outside world, it’s closer than you think.
Little Palm Island in the lower Florida Keys feels less like a resort and more like a reset button. Long before guests reach their thatched-roof bungalow, the scene is set. Driving up to the island Shore Station at mile marker 28.5 on Little Torch Key, you’re greeted by a team that will take care of your car and your baggage (both literal and figurative), while placing a complimentary rum punch in your hand. After a short 15-minute complimentary cruise on the island’s own motor yacht, a Little Palm Island team member will give you a brief tour of the island: the dining room where breakfast and dinner are served, the monkey hut for sundowners and after-dinner drinks, the pool and beach, and the Truman Outhouse – a former outhouse, now converted into a private booth in which to make cell phone calls if you must.
Little Palm Island discourages cell phone calls in all public areas. Also verboten: drone usage and smoking in public areas. There are no TVs in your suite, no traffic sounds, no crowds, and no pressure to fill every hour with activity. Instead, the soundtrack is rustling palms, gentle waves, and birdsong. The biggest competition at Little Palm is an informal tally of how many Key Deer you can spot, and the only time you might need your watch is to make sure you make your spa appointment on time.
That slower pace creates magic – and connection. At the poolside palapa bar, friendships are made over Spa Coladas and Jungle Birds. Liz or one of the other bartenders will make sure you stay hydrated with bottled waters and crispy Diet Cokes with extra lime. Phones are traded for paper books. Time is marked by the tide, not watches. That’s not to say there’s ever a dull moment. Guests can fill their day with snorkeling, kayaking or paddleboarding, can take one of the property’s Boston Whalers out for a spin, or spot key deer paddling in from nearby keys.
The resort’s SpaTerre plays a large part in the resort and embraces treatments inspired by nature, combining tropical botanicals with global healing traditions. Alessandra, for instance, described every potion and elixir used, along with its soothing and plumping properties. Body rituals are complemented by beach yoga, guided meditation, and personal training for guests seeking a more active form of restoration. The emphasis isn’t on transformation through intensity but on reconnecting with body and mind through stillness and mindful movement.
At the Dining Room, executive chef Rodrigo Albornoz’s ever-rotating menu features locally sourced seafood, seasonal produce, and globally inspired flavors, with each meal designed to unfold slowly rather than be rushed. Private beach dinners and chef-curated tasting menus encourage diners to savor not only the food but the setting itself. Without cell phones, conversation flows, and sunsets become entertainment.
Science has increasingly shown that periods of true rest reduce stress hormones, improve mood, and enhance creativity. While wellness tourism often focuses on fitness classes and biohacking, Little Palm Island embraces healing through relaxation and beauty. It is an approach that feels refreshingly countercultural. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do isn’t another workout, another green juice, or another meditation app.
Sometimes it’s simply sitting beneath a palm tree with a drink in your hand, listening to the ocean, and allowing yourself to do nothing at all.
