Musts for May

Hyundai Air & Sea Show: The “Greatest Show Above the Earth” returns to Miami Beach on Memorial Day weekend (May 28-29) with everything from ThunderCats boat races, Cigarette boat demonstrations, parachute teams, military jet displays and more. Entertainment on the first day (Saturday) includes an 8 p.m. concert by 3 Doors Down. Visit usasalute.com for ticket info.

Modern Quilt Exhibition: Kristin Beck curates this ode to artists making contemporary statements with needle and thread. The showcase, which runs through June 16 at Bailey Contemporary Arts Center in Pompano Beach (pompanobeacharts.org), features detailed, eye-catching works that turn traditional quilting on its ear by, among other things, exploring social justice and diversity issues.

Hawks Cay Resort: The idyllic escape in Duck Key is encouraging travelers to get away from it all—gas prices be damned. As part of its “Breeze Into the Keys” promotion, Hawks Cay is offering a 20-percent discount for stays of three-plus nights—as well as a $150 gas credit. Don’t want to use the credit for fuel? The credit also is good for poolside cocktails, spa services, or dining at a resort restaurant. Valid through Aug. 15. (hawkscay.com)

NSU Art Museum: No trip to the museum associated with Nova Southeastern University is complete without perusing the whimsical gifts connected to an exhibition. For the ongoing “Confrontation: Keith Haring and Pierre Alechinsky”—which explores the influence that the Belgian avant-garde painter had on Haring, the renowned American street artist—art lovers can purchase Haring-inspired items including an LED neon heart sign (pictured) and a chess set with pieces based on his works.
