It is hard to believe that the school year will be starting again so soon! Throughout the year there are wonderful programs taking place at all of the schools in Coconut Creek and your City Commission is pleased to participate in many of the activities. I encourage all of you to get involved in our local schools and support the inspiring efforts of the children, teachers, staff and principals! Attend the Parent-Teacher events this fall and take an interest in your children’s and grandchildren’s activities. This may be as easy as supporting football, basketball and baseball games or attending school plays. Help show pride in your kids’ events by wearing school colors and knowing their mascots.

Since every high school student is required to obtain community service hours, there are many ways you can help guide children to participate in a variety of endeavors. One of the best ways I have seen the high school kids get involved is with the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Make it a family effort. We also have several local not-for-profit organizations in Coconut Creek that can utilize volunteers.

I know some parents in Coconut Creek have children attending schools in other cities and I encourage you to get involved with their schools, too. For those of us who do not have children or grandchildren attending school, join me in signing up to be a mentor. Once a month, I devote at least one hour mentoring a group of high school girls at Atlantic Technical High School in conjunction with the Women of Tomorrow organization.   There are numerous volunteer opportunities and mentoring programs which can utilize your talents. Local businesses also may consider sponsorship and partnership opportunities with schools as one way to get involved in the community. Visit the Broward County Public Schools’ website for the Office of Parents, Business and Community Partnerships at www.getinvolvedineducation.com. Private schools will have similar opportunities. Your efforts can and will make a positive difference in the lives of your kids and our students!

As a reminder, Tuesday, August 26 is Election Day and every registered voter will have candidates to vote for in the School Board and Judicial races. Additionally, there will be primary elections for many voters. If you prefer to vote by mail or vote at an early voting site beginning August 15, call 954.357.7050 or visit www.browardsoe.org for more information. Be a positive role model and VOTE!
