Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center gathers backpacks for kids

However children go back to school next year, Fort Lauderdale-based Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center wants them to be prepared. CDTC is holding its annual Back to School Drive, aiming to collect more than 800 filled backpacks by Aug. 6.

The organization notes that school supplies cost more than $100 on average—a significant amount for the families at CDTC, more than 85% of whom were living at or below the poverty level before the pandemic struck.

“Our children will still need basic supplies whether they are in the classroom or learning at home,” says CDTC director of development Jessica Vones. “The gift of a new backpack lightens the burden on our families and prepares our kids for successful learning.”

CDTC is requesting backpacks be pre-filled to reduce the number of volunteers needed to pack supplies. CDTC will also make its distribution contactless to keep families and volunteers safe.

“We do everything possible to help the families we serve thrive,” said Ana Calderon Randazzo, executive director of CDTC. “Being ready for the classroom—even if it’s virtual—is important to every child’s success in life. We are grateful to the community for helping these amazing and dedicated families prepare for the new school year.”

School supplies can be shipped directly to or dropped off during business hours at CDTC, located at 1401 S. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Donations are also accepted online to help with the drive.
