5 & Dine: Healthy Dishes

Start the New Year off right at these diet-friendly restaurants.

Farmer’s Table

Address: 1901 North Military Trail, Boca Raton

The Buzz: Food here is ordered from the “never-ever” menu because the promise is that there is never a chemical, hormone, pesticide or antibiotic in anything served. Carnivores and herbivores can dine in happy harmony: meatballs made from chicken or quinoa can be ordered as an appetizer or atop the “Spasta” and Meatball entrée – spaghetti squash, organic spinach topped with a tomato basil sauce with the option of vegan or house-made mozzarella. House favorites are the Vegan Buddha Bowl made with sweet potato noodles and Yuzu Sesame Chia Crusted Tuna with a passion fruit emulsion.

Abbalé Telavivian Kitchen

Address: 19999 Aventura Boulevard, Aventura

The Buzz:  A charming favorite in South Beach’s South of Fifth neighborhood expands to Aventura with double the space and covered outdoor seating. Chef Sam Gorenstein now has a larger kitchen to re-invent the melting pot of flavors from the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, which have attracted a foodie following in SoBe. Healthy and tasty dishes abound, including the Grilled Yellowfin Tuna with beluga lentil and summer corn tabbouleh, Persian cucumbers and herbed tahini dressing and Sumac-Lemon Chicken Shashlik with pickled cabbage, marinated tomato, red onions, toum (Middle Eastern garlic sauce) on a charred laffa, a traditionally vegan thin bread.

The Katherine

Address: 723 E. Broward Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale

The Buzz: Opened in 2022 in the space formerly occupied by Foxy Brown, Chef Timon Balloo, owned Sugarcane and Balloo both in Miami before heading north. His latest is named for his wife, Marissa Katherine, and the menu is inspired by the couple’s travels and their backgrounds: his roots are Chinese, Indian and Trinidadian, hers are Thai-Columbian. The Thai influence comes through in the red curry branzino and a Thai style charred cabbage salad. On the Trinidadian side, the family recipe of Mom’s Trini Oxtail with coconut rice and pikliz (a Haitian pickled vegetable relish) and the roasted marrow bones with bacon marmalade. Good-for-you home cooking.

Bamboo Healthy Foods

Address: 6240 Coral Ridge Drive, Parkland

The Buzz: Bowls, bowls and more bowls, and there’s even a kid’s bowl. Bamboo started in Coral Springs in 2015 and was a hit with fresh, made to order, Instagram-worthy presentations before heading not too far away from the neighborhood to Parkland. Fruits and vegetables come from Florida farms, and everything is sourced organic, including meats. The acai bowls, a traditional Brazilian smoothie bowl made from frozen acai berries native to South America, are hearty enough to be filling, but if you’re looking for a meal, the Korean bowl can’t be beat.

BALEENKitchen at Solé Miami

Address: 17315 Collins Ave., Sunny Isles Beach

The Buzz: Taking a cue from its namesake, the Baleen whale, known for traveling the world’s waters from the arctic to the tropics, and, with its view of the ocean, the restaurant gives fish and seafood a top-line focus. One of its signature dishes is the seafood paella, a mix of clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari, chorizo, baby scallops with saffron rice and a house made sofrito sauce. Each menu item is indicated with a notice of possible allergens, whether it is vegan/vegetarian or strictly vegan, and also denotes gluten-free dishes.
