Five Florida dogs are among 25 semifinalists competing for national recognition in the American Humane Society’s 16th annual Hero Dog Awards.
The nationwide competition recognizes dogs whose service, courage and companionship have made an extraordinary impact. This year’s semifinalists compete in five categories: law enforcement and first-responder dogs, service and guide/hearing dogs, therapy dogs, military dogs, and emerging hero and shelter dogs.
Florida’s contenders include Canela of Oviedo and Eddie of Miami in the service and guide/hearing category; Star of Tampa in the therapy dog category; K9 Lea of Fernandina Beach among military dogs; and Raleigh Roo of Clearwater in the emerging hero and shelter category.
“Each of these extraordinary canines is living proof of something I believe deeply: that the bond between humans and animals has the power to heal us in ways nothing else can,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Society.
The public can vote for their favorite semifinalists through Sept. 18. Winners will be selected from dogs whose stories demonstrate extraordinary service, including saving lives, assisting their human companions and inspiring their communities.
