Tell us about your dog and what makes them special to you.
Kona is our 5-year-old mini-Australian labradoodle—and our very first pet. My husband, our two sons, and I were all skeptical, but it was Covid, and we finally had time to take care of a puppy. Like many families at that time, we went for it! None of us had even held a dog before… and now we can’t imagine life without him.
How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?
The beginning? Rough. Kona was all energy—biting ankles, peeing everywhere, hiding under the couch, and refusing walks. But we grew together and eventually settled into a routine. Now he’s the unofficial mayor of our neighborhood and fully in charge at home. He sleeps in our bed, climbs the furniture, and insists on being glued to someone at all times. No personal space, no favorites—just pure love for whoever’s closest.
Has your dog ever helped you through a tough time or big life change?
Absolutely. Three years ago, we left Chicago and moved to Florida so I could become the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Broward County. It was a big transition for our whole family, but Kona was our constant. He seems to have a sixth sense for when someone is hurting or needs a hug. It’s hard to be sad when a giant teddy bear is sitting in your lap trying to lick you to death!
