Barbara W. Goldberg & Rosie

From reluctant pet parent to bulldog devotee—Rosie made resistance futile and the office unforgettable.

How Rosie came to me:

It’s one of those classic tales where resistance meets persistence—and persistence wins. A few of my family members had this fascination with English Bulldogs some 10 years ago. They thought having one would be hilarious and would help entertain our older Yellow Lab who was aging gracefully. I, however, was not convinced. They insisted. I resisted. Then one day, the doorbell rang, and there she was: a wrinkly, stubborn little meatball on my doorstep. Apparently, I’d been outvoted. From that moment on, she claimed her spot (mostly in my bed), and I had to admit—life was a lot more entertaining with her around. The rest is history.

What’s her quirkiest habit or trait?

Where to begin? She snores with her eyes open. It’s as if she’s some kind of half-asleep, half-keeping-an-eye-on-you trance. She also pants like she’s just run a marathon, even if she’s just waddled to her food bowl. And despite being built all wrong, she’s got the confidence of a show dog.  She has a face only a mother could love—or at least that’s what one lady on the street thought when she saw her walking and sarcastically asked, “What happened to her face?”  Yea, she’s quirky, but, come on…that face has personality!

How do I juggle my personal life with her?

It’s all about balance, or lack thereof.  She’s a professional bed hog, so sharing space is more like giving up space. She’s my trusty sidekick at work and she takes her role as our “Director of Drool” very seriously. She loves coming to the office—probably more than some of the staff love having her there. I can’t help but notice that a few quietly leave the room when she arrives (are they trying to tell me something?). She’s not much of a barker, but she does leave behind a scent that often prompts a candle-lighting ceremony. It’s kind of her signature move. She definitely has her own fan club, though a few are still on the fence. I get it – she’s an acquired taste.
