Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) awarded the Broward Partnership for the Homeless with an $850,000 Legislative Award to tackle homelessness and the affordable housing crisis in Broward County. The presentation took place at the Broward Partnership in Fort Lauderdale and was joined by local community leaders and Broward Partnership representatives.
The $850,000 funding will be dedicated to the construction of Aspire 1650, a vital housing project aimed at supporting vulnerable communities in the area. Aspire 1650 is set to feature around 80 apartment units and provide accessible common spaces, amenities, resources, and services. The development will be located adjacent to the existing North Homeless Assistance Center in Pompano Beach, serving as an income-eligible housing community.
“We are immensely grateful to Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick for her unwavering support and dedication to our mission,” Tom Campbell says, CEO of Broward Partnership. “Today’s check presentation is crucial for Aspire 1650, our second affordable housing development. This project exemplifies our vision of safe and stable housing for all and highlights the importance of public-private partnerships.”
As part of its plan, Aspire 1650 intends to reserve a portion of its apartments for permanent supportive housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, including units for individuals with special needs. The remaining apartments will be designated for affordable housing for income-qualifying individuals and families who do not require supportive services. The funding for this initiative was secured through the U.S. House of Representatives appropriations process.
“The housing crisis in Broward County has made it one of the least affordable places to live in the country. It pains me deeply to know that over 2,000 Broward County residents are experiencing homelessness. No one in our nation should be without a roof over their head,” Cherfilus-McCormick says. “With this funding, we are taking a significant step towards addressing homelessness and the affordable housing crisis in Broward County. I am proud to have secured this investment, which will provide a stable environment where our community’s most vulnerable can rebuild their lives, access essential services, and join a supportive community. This funding reflects my unwavering commitment to protecting, building, and delivering for Florida’s 20th Congressional District.”
The event featured speeches from Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick, Broward Partnership CEO Tom Campbell, Mitch Rosenstein from Green Mills Group, and Broward Partnership Board Member Dodie Keith-Lazowick. They emphasized the importance of the funding and its anticipated impact on the community.
Building upon Broward Partnership’s first affordable housing endeavor, Seven on Seventh, unveiled in September 2023, Aspire 1650 carries on this legacy. Seven on Seventh provides 72 homes and essential amenities in downtown Fort Lauderdale, catering to individuals and families making the transition out of homelessness.
