Tell us about your dog.
Patches, my 15-year-old Shih Tzu, is more than just a pet—he’s family, a constant companion, and the heart of my home. With his big, soulful eyes and the signature patch of gray fur that earned him his name, Patches has a gentle presence that has brought comfort and joy through every chapter of life.
How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?
I adopted Patches from the Broward Humane Society when he was just 7 months old, a tiny ball of fluff with curious eyes and an uncertain past. He had been surrendered by a family that could no longer care for him, and though shy at first, there was something about the way he leaned into my hand that told me we were meant to find each other. Adopting him wasn’t just about giving him a second chance; it was about starting a lifelong friendship that would shape my heart in ways I never imagined.
What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?
What’s most remarkable, though, is the comfort his presence brings. Patches has grown up with me—through career changes, life milestones, heartbreaks, and celebrations. His quiet companionship has been a steady thread through the chaos of life. He may be slowing down, a little grayer in his coat and takes longer naps in the sun, but his spirit remains as vibrant as ever. Fifteen years with Patches have taught me the meaning of unconditional love, patience, and finding joy in small, quiet moments. He’s not just a pet—he’s my best friend, a little therapist in fur, and a reminder that some of the best things in life come with four paws, a wagging tail, and a beating heart.
