Key Lime Pie in the Sky

A local bakery continues to make a name for itself in South Florida.

Derek Kaplan, a former Miami firefighter and Division-I football player, pie-lover and self-taught baker, opened his first decadent dessert shop in Wynwood in 2014, then expanded to Coconut Grove and moved north with another Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop in 2022 at 250 N. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. You’ll feel like you died and went to dessert heaven when you check out the menu of more than 50 pies, cakes, cheesecakes, brownies, bars and cookies, all made from scratch, of course. Yet, it’s his Key Lime Pie that still ranks high as a fan favorite. It has a special place in his dessert-loving heart because it’s the one that got him started, making the pies with his dad and selling them to local shops. Perfect as a cool down in South Florida’s hot summers, let’s just say Derek’s Key Lime Pie takes the cake.
