Feeding South Florida Launches New Mobile FARMacy

To further its mission of ending hunger in South Florida, Feeding South Florida (FSF) recently launched a mobile grocery store to provide healthy food options to vulnerable residents. The one-aisle, air-conditioned mobile grocery store consists of donated items and farmers’ markets products as well as an educational component to improve health options for at-risk populations.

The mobile food store was made possible with support from Humana Inc., Aetna and Quantum Foundation. By having a mobile unit providing fresh produce, protein, dairy, and healthy staple items, residents at community events, health fairs, senior sites, and less served communities can better access the nutrition they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“We are thankful and excited for the support of Humana Inc, Aetna and Quantum Foundation as we take this next innovative step toward ensuring improved health outcomes and meeting people where they are and providing a dignified,” says Sari Vatske, executive vice president of Feeding South Florida. “This project has been a true collaborative effort backed by research that supports the idea that food is medicine.”

Payments accepted at the mobile Farmacy include the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) EBT dollars, debit cards or cash. A Fresh Access Bucks site also permits two for one produce items.

In 2020 alone, Feeding South Florida provided over 176 million pounds of food (147.5 million meals) to over 1 million individuals in South Florida through a local network of more than 300 nonprofit community organizations.
