Feeding South Florida Offers Cooking Classes in August

No prior experience in cooking is necessary to join.

The leading hunger-relief organization in South Florida, Feeding South Florida, is set to hold a series of cooking classes at its Palm Beach County warehouse in Boynton Beach. These classes will take place in the organization’s one-of-a-kind Community Kitchen, offering an opportunity for individuals to learn about cooking while supporting a great cause. In every class, all the participants can acquire practical culinary skills with Susan Taves, the Director of Culinary Services at Feeding South Florida. Moreover, they can take their culinary creations home and indulge in them.

Part of the proceeds from the classes goes towards supporting Feeding South Florida’s mission to end hunger in the community. The organization works tirelessly to provide immediate access to healthy and nourishing food, advocate for those suffering from hunger and poverty, and transform lives through innovative programming and education.

In 2020, Feeding South Florida revealed a new, cutting-edge community kitchen spanning 5,000 square feet. Although it is in Palm Beach County, this kitchen provides 85,000 meals for people in the four counties that Feeding South Florida serves, including Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. This versatile community kitchen serves as a location for meal production, culinary training programs, social enterprise catering, incubator space for program graduates, and health-focused cooking classes. Furthermore, the kitchen at 4925 Park Ridge Blvd. in Boynton Beach is instrumental in furthering Feeding South Florida’s mission of ending hunger in South Florida. It can create up to 20,200 meals daily for children’s after-school and summer programs, for older adults and for medically tailored meals. The kitchen is also crucial in providing essential meals during disaster response.

Feeding South Florida’s upcoming cooking classes include:

Taco Tuesday | Tuesday, Aug. 15, 6-7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn how to prepare homemade tortillas and a delicious pasilla chile sauce. Chicken and mushroom fillings will be available along with the traditional taco toppings to prepare and enjoy.

A Tarte for Two | Saturday, Aug. 19, 2-3 p.m.

The community is invited to join Feeding South Florida in its Community Kitchen to learn how to prepare a flaky delicious crust for an apple filling and transform it into a sensational tart. Participants can pair it with ice cream, cheddar cheese, or salty caramel for a fabulous addition when they take home their masterpiece for dessert.

Cost: $55 for two (18+ years of age and one minor)

Sushi Workshop | Friday, Aug. 25, 6-7:30 p.m.

Feeding South Florida invites the community to learn the fundamentals of sushi and prepare traditional Japanese sushi rice. Participants will test their skills as a couple and learn to make vegetarian and spicy tuna nori rolls, nigiri sushi and more using centuries-old techniques.
