Celebrating 10 Years of Sweet Success: Fireman Derek’s Reigns in the Dessert World

The bakery has a selection of over 50 pies, cakes, cheesecakes, brownies, bars and cookies, all crafted from scratch.

Former firefighter turned baking extraordinaire and entrepreneur Derek Kaplan had the vision for Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop long before its first store in Wynwood. Kaplan, a self-taught baker, started by squeezing limes by hand at age 15 to create his famous Key Lime Pie. What began as a food truck eventually led to the opening of the original Wynwood shop in 2014. Over the past decade, Fireman Derek’s has expanded into a dessert empire, with Kaplan and his talented team of bakers creating over 50 unique pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies and ice cream at their thriving storefronts in Wynwood, Coconut Grove, and Fort Lauderdale, with new locations on the horizon.

In celebration of its first ten years since opening its brick-and-mortar location, Fireman Derek’s has revealed a stunning new mural by artist Carlos Solano at its main store in Wynwood. The mural is a gesture of gratitude to all those who have supported the brand over the past decade.

“We are so excited to be celebrating 10 years of business here in Wynwood,” Kaplan says. “It’s a tremendous milestone that we will continue to build upon every day. Thank you to all of our customers for believing in our brand and desserts over the years; we are so grateful and can’t wait to celebrate this weekend.”

The bakery is supporting the Wynwood arts community by offering prints of the new mural signed by both the artist and Fireman Derek. These exclusive signed mural prints are available for $30 and can only be purchased in-store at the Wynwood location. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local arts organization.
