Austin W. Bergman, Kaya & Brie

From heartbreak to healing, two Goldendoodles brought love, laughter, and unexpected comfort.

Tell us about your dogs and what makes them special to you.

Kaya, 5, is the larger one (Mama). Brie, 2, is the smaller one, the runt of the litter. They put a smile on my face when I walk in the door. Brie will actually cry if she has not seen you in a while.

How did your dog come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

I didn’t want a dog in the beginning; everything in my house is white and I am a neat freak. I travel a lot and a dog just sounded like a chore. About 4 years ago my partner David put me in the car and drove me to a breeder in Delray. All I could see was this white ball jumping…well, we left with Kaya. Everyone fell in love with Kaya, so they talked me into breeding her about 2 years ago, and she had 9 puppies. We kept Brie, being the underdog,  and I am so glad we did.

Has your dog ever helped you through a tough time or big life change?

Well, in 2016 I got a divorce from my ex-wife when I came out; it was a huge explosion. We had two young daughters that were wrapped up in it. The door was slammed shut between me and my daughters and still is today. When I look at Kaya and Brie, it’s like my daughters are here and back in my life. As wild as it sounds, Kaya and Brie and the exact same years apart as my daughters. There are times when it’s very emotional for me – Kaya and Brie help me get through it.

What are your dogs’ quirkiest habits or personality traits?

They both kiss you good night and lay their heads on the pillow.
