Citizen’s Academy

Are you interested in becoming a civic ambassador for the City of Coconut Creek? Do you want to learn first-hand the ins and outs of City Hall, the Police Department, Parks & Recreation and other departments? If so, here is the perfect opportunity: join the Citizen’s Academy.

The Academy is a free nine-week program that starts on Feb. 19. The group meets every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Personnel who manage or perform city services will teach each class. Most classes take place in the Commission Chambers, but the program also includes a bus tour and impressive outdoor demonstrations. The Academy culminates with a mock commission meeting.

It is important to be involved in our community because every person plays a role in making their community strong. Community engagement is a passion some develop as they begin to interact with new and different individuals outside their normal circle of friends and colleagues. The Academy is a good way to meet community-minded neighbors and to really learn how your government is run.

Here is what former participants had to say:

“I learned how the Commission works. It’s a phenomenal experience.” – Miriam Mendelson

“What really impressed me was the dedication of the staff. I think that’s why Coconut Creek is a great place to live.” – David Lines

“The education is beyond a government class. It’s just excellent.” – Carolyn Donkel

Part of our goal is to develop a diverse group of citizens who can offer “ex-officio” feedback and build a civic leadership network that increases participation in local affairs.

The idea of the Citizen’s Academy came about from an Alliance for Innovation conference workshop that the city’s Community Relations Director and I attended in 2006. We enhanced and tailored the program and are now teaching class number ten!
