Table Talk: Summer Feast

Discover new restaurants and Pride Month celebrations.

The iconic R House — an LGBTQ+ establishment, drag brunch performance destination and Latin-inspired restaurant in Wynwood — will celebrate both its 10-year anniversary and Pride Month this June. The celebration is particularly special for owners Rocco Carulli and Owen Bale, a married gay couple who has long prided themselves on creating a business committed to inclusivity, creativity and hospitality.

The couple were newlyweds when they opened R House in 2014, with Carulli at the helm of the kitchen, and Bale in the front of the house. With its Latin-inspired menu, funky décor and lively entertainment, R House became a go-to spot in Wynwood. When the business faced challenges during the pandemic, Bale and Carulli launched their now top-rated Drag Brunch, which they said, “single-handedly saved the struggling restaurant when the pandemic hit in 2020.”

“If there was one message I could tell the world, it would be to never give up,” said Bale. “We never stopped working no matter the challenges we’ve faced in the past ten years, and because of it, we’ve built this magical, liberating place from the ground up that is now a huge phenomenon.”

Talkin’ Tacos Opens Five New Locations in the Tri-County Area

During the height of the pandemic, two South Floridian childhood friends, Mohammad Farraj and Omar Al-Massalkhi, devised a plan to serve scratch-made tacos from a food truck. From humble beginnings, Talkin’ Tacos has blown up into a rapidly expanding chain of brick-and-mortar, fast-casual Mexican eateries. By the end of 2024, the brand is projected to have 11 new locations open in South Florida, including one recently opened in North Miami and four more in the tri-county area, including Delray Beach, Davie, Sunrise, and Oakland Park. The restaurant features iconic Mexican dishes like the 12-hour braised beef birria (a meaty stew) or southwest chicken tacos, a few innovative fusion dishes, like the birria ramen or birria pizza, and some indulgent desserts, such as dulce de leche churros.

Here are the locations and the expected opening dates:

  • Davie (full restaurant build out), 7780 Griffin Road; ETA: August
  • Fort Lauderdale: 1619 E Sunrise Blvd; ETA: August
  • Pompano Beach: 431 S Federal Highway; ETA: September
